The Red Quill (Art Flick Pattern)

Notes: Ephemerella subvaria is represented by two artificials.  The Hendrickson represents the female and the Red Quill the male.  This from Art Flick's Streamside Guide.  

Materials:

 

 

 

Hook:

Standard Dry Fly #12 or #14

Thread:

Reddish Brown, Brown, Black

Wing:

Flank Feather of Mandarin or Wood Duck Drake

Tail:

A few wisps of dun spade or barb feather

Rib:

 

Body:

Quill of a large hackle feather from Rhode Island Red cock, stripped and well soaked (overnight is recommended by Mr. Flick)

Hackle:

Natural Blue Dunn

Head:

Standard Whip Finish

 

 

Method:

 

  1. Lay down a solid thread base.
  2. Tie in wings, stand upright, split and secure
  3. Wrap thread to back and tie in tail.
  4. Tie in well-soaked quill, wrap thread forward
  5. Wrap quill forward short of wing, tie off.
  6. Tie in hackle, wrap thread forward.
  7. Wrap hackle behind the wing and then in front.
  8. Tie off hackle, form head, whip finish
